< Silver Soldering Operations #2 >

As well as the last time, the second series of silver soldering operations were done at a club member's factory.

Solder the crown stay upper angles and the turret bush on the firebox roof plate. The angles are fixed by rivets and the bush are fixed by crimping surface around the bush. In order to flow the solder to both inner and outer angles, some solder wires were push into the angles assembly.

Solder the dome flange on the front barrel and solder the safety valve bushes on the back barrel. Silver solder wire pieces are put inside of the barrel and heat from the outside.

The photos show views from outside and inside of the soldered dome flange. The dome flange was temporary fixed by four brass pins, in particular, left and right pins from outside and front and back pins from inside. The left and right pins are to prevent tilt of the flange. The safety valve bushes are also fixed by four pins in each.

The front and back barrels are fixed by rivets. They are fixed by each other with a telescopic joint. Note a large steel pipe is chuck in the bench vise and was used as anvil.

Apply flux and put wire pieces of the silver solder on the step inside the barrels. Heat from outside and melt and flow the solder. In order to prevent fall of the solder pieces, the step of the barrel is cut in 45 degree taper.

Heat by the propane torch from outside till the solder pieces are meld and flow to outside.

Solder band plate at both sides of the roof plate. The band plates are to join both side plates to the roof plate. These are also fixed by rivets and soldered.

Solder tubes, flues and front stays on the firebox tubeplate. That is a recover operation of the last month's mistake.

Solder firebox inner wrapper on the tubeplate. Line up solder pieces inside step and heat from outside. Note ceramic sheet is wrapped around the tubes and flues in order to prevent burnout of the tubes and flues.

Solder the crown stay assembly. These are fixed by brass screws in advance. In order to flow solder in whole joints, I separated soldering in two times, tilt toward left or right side.

Soldering of the inner boiler is finished. The smokebox tubeplate is not soldered yet. That is just to hold the front tips of the tubes and flues. Here the second series of soldering operations are finished.

At home, as a preparation of the next soldering operations, the throat plate and roof plate are fixed on the barrel by rivets. The photo shows anvil for riveting the roof plate, made by steel disc and flat bar.

Apply flax and put silver solder wire pieces for the next soldering operation. I always apply flux after riveting, because it is necessary to check and eliminate gap between the parts after riveting.
