< Ashpan 2 >
I'll make the grate here. The materials are stainless steel flat bars (12
x 3 mm), threaded rods, washers, and M5 nuts.
Assembling the grate. Only the bars at the both ends have countersunk holes,
while the other bars have round holes. Insert the flat bars and the nuts
alternatively and tighten the nuts. Sometimes, add a few washers so as
to adjust the full width. The shorter bar and the next bar with a hole
are for hooking a pull rod.
The threaded rod ends are riveted into the bars at the both ends. The threaded
rod ends were annealed in advance.
The photo shows the pull rod to draw out the ashpan from the ashpan.
In order to introduce the grate from the backward of the firebox, The back wall of the firebox is filed off. Care must be taken not to remove the fillet of the solder.
The front and back boiler cradles are modified in order to mount the ashpan. The stretcher of the back cradle is replaced with a flat bar, in order to clear the rails' ends for the grate.
The medium part of the front cradle is milled down. Also, slipping plates are screwed down on both ends of the cradle.
The ashpan was fixed on the chassis. Its front end is directly screwed down on the front cradle, while the rails of the ashpan are fixed on the back cradle.
Note a push rod with a coil spring that is to open the ashpan bottom doors. The bracket at the middle of the back cradle is to hold a grate lifter.
It is the grate lifter to lift up the back end of the grate. Its middle point is the fulcrum and is held by the pin.
The left side photo shows the down position of the lifter, while the right side photo shows the up position. Note the back end of the lifter is bolted down onto the chassis.
